De meeste rotsen en bodems die ze op Naxos hebben, zijn niet zo geweldig om water op te vangen en/of op te slaan. De kristallijne rotsen (leisteen, gneiss, migmatiet, granodioriet en marmer) die het grootste deel van Naxos vormen, hebben een lage primaire permeabiliteit; het vermogen om er water doorheen te geleiden hangt af van een breuk en/of oplossingsgeïnduceerde secundaire permeabiliteit. De belangrijkste parameter die het grondwaterstromingsregime in gebroken watervoerende lagen, zoals de kristallijne gesteenten, regelt, is het breukpatroon.
