De moerbezieboom (vooral Morus alba en Morus nigra) heeft in Griekenland vooral een praktische rol: als voedselboom (vruchten) én als bladleverancier voor de zijderups, plus als schaduw- en sierboom in dorpen en tuinen.
De bladeren van de witte moerbei zijn klassiek voer voor zijderupsen; zo is de boom verbonden met eeuwenoude zijdeproductie in het oostelijk Middellandse-Zeegebied, inclusief Griekenland.
De vruchten worden vers gegeten en verwerkt in huisgemaakte jam, siroop en snoep, en vormen tegelijk een geliefde voedselbron voor vogels.
In dorpen en stadjes verschijnt de moerbei vaak als schaduwboom langs pleinen of bij waterpunten; de naam van het Kretenzische dorp Mournies is zelfs afgeleid van “mouria”, Grieks voor moerbeiboom.
