Monemvasia is een kleinschalig voorbeeld van de horsten en graben die je aantreft over de gehele Peloponnesos. De meest belangrijke breuklijnen in het zuiden verlopen NZ, met daarop secundaire breuklijnen OW. Die OW breuklijnen vormen de horst van Monemvasia. De NZ breuklijn spits het blok grotendeels af van het vasteland. Het is een enorme blok dolomiet die geologisch aansluit bij de kalkstenen iets ten westen, op het vasteland van de Peloponnesos.
