Het ziekenhuis, dat werd ontworpen door William Deane Butler in Elizabethaanse stijl, opende in 1855 als het Sligo Asylum. In de jaren 1920 werd het Sligo Mental Hospital en in de jaren 1950 werd het St. Columba's Hospital. Na de introductie van de-institutionalisering eind jaren 1980 ging het ziekenhuis een periode van achteruitgang in en sloot het in 1992. Na te zijn omgebouwd voor hotelgebruik, heropende het in 2005 als het Clarion Hotel en werd het vervolgens hernoemd naar het Clayton Hotel. Sinds 2021 zijn er 167 kamers beschikbaar voor gebruik.
