Torre Grossa werd gebouwd in 1310. De torens in San Gimignano werden ooit gebruikt als een manier om verdediging te bieden tegen aanvallen van buitenaf. De rijke families konden op deze manier hun macht en bevoorrechte positie laten zien.
De hoogste toren van San Gimignano, de Torre Grossa in Piazza del Duomo, is geopend voor bezoekers.
De toren is 54 meter hoog en heeft maar liefst 218 treden naar de top. De treden zijn gemakkelijk te betreden met jonge kinderen. Het laatste stukje naar de top moet worden gedaan op een steile ladder. Je bevindt je daarna op een prachtig uitkijkpunt. Het uitzicht is fantastisch.
