Dit kanaal werd rond 1930 gegraven om een noodzakelijk oost-westverbinding te creëren tussen de Vecht en Hilversum. Het maakte deel uit van een heel ontsluitingsplan voor deze streek, waaronder ook de aanleg van de Provinciale weg die parallel aan het kanaal loopt. Dit plan was ontworpen door hoofdinspecteur van Rijkswaterstaat Anton Mussert, die in 1934 ontslagen zou worden bij het Ministerie vanwege zijn NSB activiteiten. Door zijn plannen was de regio veel beter toegankelijk, wat een positief effect op de economische ontwikkeling heeft gehad.
