Het dorp ligt ten zuidwesten van Sneek en IJlst, ten westen van Hommerts, ten noordwesten van Woudsend en ten oosten van Gaastmeer en Oudega. De dorpskern ligt aan de noordwestelijke oever van het Heegermeer en de noordkant van het Johan Frisokanaal.In 2021 telde het dorp 2.225 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen De Bird, Lytshuizen en Osingahuizen.
