Van oudsher wordt in Zuid-Limburg kalksteen gewonnen en gebruikt als meststof en als bouwmateriaal voor huizen, kerken en vestingwerken. De winning van losse kalksteen voor industriële toepassing (grondstof voor de cementproductie en de kunstmestbereiding) geschiedt in open groeven. Bij winning in dagbouw wordt eerst de circa 15 meter deklaag weggegraven en vervolgens wordt het kalksteenpakket van boven naar beneden afgegraven.
Groeve 't Rooth is een mergelgroeve, waar in dagbouw mergel wordt gewonnen. De groeve is gedeeltelijk heringericht, en is uitgegroeid tot een uniek natuurgebied, waar diverse zeldzame plant- en diersoorten zich hebben ontwikkeld.
