Rijdend door het dekzandlandschap van de Achterhoek en Twente krijg je om de zoveel meter telkens een ander uitzicht. Soms is het een bosrand, dan weer zijn het akkers en weilanden of verspreid in het landschap liggende boerderijen.
Je ziet landschapselementen achter houtwallen en boomgroepen verdwijnen en even later weer verschijnen. Het lijkt net een toneel met verschillende coulissen, vandaar de naam coulisselandschap.
De beplanting in een coulisselandschap bestaat vooral uit (meidoorn)heggen en houtwallen. Houtwallen zijn aarden wallen, dichtbegroeid met bomen en struiken. Tegenwoordig zijn veel oude houtwallen deels of geheel uit het landschap verdwenen.
