Kautenbach er en lille landsby midt mellem skovklædte skråninger, ved et jernbaneknudepunkt. Dets navn optræder første gang i gamle tekster omkring 1310 som "Kutenburch". Etymologien af stednavnet udtrykkes bedst af pennen fra Dicks - Edmond de la Fontaine, luxembourgsk forfatter (1823-1891): "Kautenbach bærer dog ikke navnet på en bæk, som navnet synes at antyde. Det ligger i det hjørne, der dannes ved samløbet af to vandløb, Wiltz og Clerf." (..) Bach har betydningen af det franske ord for bøjning, krumning, bryst, udhulning, hul, dal. Ordet Caut er keltisk for klippe. Disse to navne sammen, Kaut og bach, afspejler perfekt udseendet af Kautenbach, en landsby placeret i hulen af en dal omgivet af forhøjede klipper(..) .
