Denne kanal blev gravet omkring 1930 for at skabe en nødvendig øst-vest forbindelse mellem Vecht og Hilversum. Den var en del af en samlet tilknytningsplan for denne region, herunder også anlægget af den regionale vej, der løber parallelt med kanalen. Denne plan blev designet af hovedinspektør for Rijkswaterstaat Anton Mussert, der i 1934 ville blive afskediget fra ministeriet på grund af sine NSB aktiviteter. Gennem sine planer blev regionen meget bedre tilgængelig, hvilket har haft en positiv indvirkning på den økonomiske udvikling.
