Emden ist eine Stadt im deutschen Bundesland Niedersachsen, gelegen an der Ems. Sie ist die größte Stadt der Region Ostfriesland und hat den westlichsten Seehafen Deutschlands. Als kreisfreie Stadt gehört Emden nicht zu einem Landreis. Die Stadt hat eine wichtige Rolle in der niederländischen Geschichte als Fluchtort für verfolgte Protestanten zu Beginn des Achtzigjährigen Krieges gespielt. Emden entstand um 800 als eine Handelsniederlassung (Amuthon) auf einer Warf an der Ems und wurde im 12. Jahrhundert die Hauptstadt des ostfriesischen Grafschaft Emsgo.
Am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts erlebte Emden eine Phase großen Wachstums. Durch die spanische Blockade niederländischer Häfen zu Beginn des niederländischen Aufstands wurde Emden der wichtigste Umschlaghafen an der Nordsee.
