Schmallenberg war im 19. Jahrhundert das Zentrum der Metallindustrie. Danach entwickelte sich hier die Textilindustrie. Der Spitzname der Stadt, "Strumpfstadt", bezieht sich auf die Textiltätigkeit der Firma Falke, die hier Socken herstellt. Heute arbeitet etwa ein Viertel der Bevölkerung in der Holzwirtschaft, der Forstwirtschaft und im Tourismus. Schmallenberg verfügt über zahlreiche Wanderwege rund um die Stadt, die Sie in die Wälder und Hügel führen. Insgesamt mehr als 2.500 km.
