Der Walchensee ist einer der tiefsten und zugleich einer der größten Alpenseen Deutschlands. Er liegt 75 km südlich von München in den Bayerischen Voralpen, auf 800 m Meereshöhe und mit seiner gesamten Fläche einschließlich der Insel Sassau in der Gemeinde Kochel am See. Im Osten und Süden grenzt sein Ufer an die Gemeinde Jachenau. Grundeigentümer von See- und Inselfläche ist der Bayrische Staat .
Als ursprünglich natürlicher See dient er seit 1924 als Wasserspeicher für das am Kochelsee 200 m tiefer gelegene Walchenseekraftwerk.
