Die Hauptstraße in Lautenthal ist nach dem Bergmann Kaspar Bitter benannt. Er entdeckte um 1530 einen ergiebigen Erzgang am Kranichsberg. Das war der Beginn des Bergbaus in Lautenthal und die Grundlage für die Entwicklung des Ortes zur Freien Bergstadt. Heute gehört der staatlich anerkannte Luftkurort als einer von fünf Ortsteilen zur Stadt Langelsheim und bietet seinen Gästen neben einem Bergbaumuseum ca. 200 km gut gepflegte Wanderwege durch den schönen Harzer Wald.
