Mit 128.494 Einwohnern ist sie die größte Stadt des Landes; knapp 20 Prozent der Gesamtbevölkerung Luxemburgs leben in der Hauptstadt. Luxemburg ist Verwaltungssitz des gleichnamigen Kantons und war es auch für den gleichnamigen Distrikt bis zu seiner Abschaffung am 3. Oktober 2015. Luxemburger nennen ihre Hauptstadt meist nur D’Stad .
