Am 14. Mai 1940 fand in Rotterdam das drittgrößte deutsche Stadtbombardement der Luftwaffe statt. Guernica in Spanien und Warschau in Polen waren bereits zuvor betroffen gewesen. Der Großteil der Innenstadt wurde in Schutt und Asche gelegt und 900 Menschen wurden getötet. Der niederländische General Henri Winkelman ergab sich nach 5 Tagen.
