Der Schermer wurde 1635 mit Hilfe von 52 reetgedeckten Mühlen entwässert. Die Mühlen mahlten das Wasser aus dem Binnenbereich in drei Stufen in den Ringkanal des Schermer und wurden daher auch Ringmühlen genannt.
Da die Windbewässerung in den Anfangsjahren des 20. Jahrhunderts zu kostspielig wurde, wurde die Schermerpolder 1929 auf elektrische Pumpen umgestellt. Die Mühlen verloren ihre Funktion und wurden in großem Umfang abgerissen. Von den 12 verbleibenden Mühlen bilden drei die Mühlengang bei Schermerhorn. Ein Mühlengang (auch Mahlgang) ist eine Anzahl zusammenarbeitender Poldermühlen zum Trockenlegen und Trockenhalten eines Polders. Aufgrund der maximalen Hebehöhe von etwa 1,50 Metern pro Mühlrad war es in tieferen Poldern notwendig, dass das Wasser in 'Stufen' angehoben wurde.
