Vor dem Heiligtum Unserer Lieben Frau von den Heilmitteln befindet sich die spektakuläre Treppe , die den Platz im Zentrum der Stadt mit dem Heiligtum auf dem Gipfel des Berges São Estevão verbindet.
Die malerische Treppe hat 686 Stufen und ist 500 Meter lang , unterteilt in 9 Abschnitte mit flachen Teilen. Der gesamte Weg ist mit Kapellen, Brunnen, Statuen und Obelisken geschmückt und weist eine große Fülle an Details auf.
Der Bau dauerte 150 Jahre und endete 1905
Die Treppe ist vom Park von Sant Estevão oder den Remédios umgeben, wo der Kult des Heiligen zum Nachteil der Verehrung der Nossa Senhora dos Remédios im Niedergang begriffen ist. Der Park, der von mehreren Wegen und mehreren Ecken mit Picknicktischen durchzogen ist, weist eine große Vielfalt an Baumarten auf.
