The German invasion of Beveren met with fierce opposition from French troops, which was followed by German reprisals against the local population.
The arrival of the Germans in the village
Upon arriving in Beveren, the Germans faced fervent French resistance, especially when leaving the village area, near the railway. The Germans vented their anger on the civilian population. They fired wildly and civilians were killed.
The church of Beveren destroyed
On the night of July 11 to 12, 1918, British planes flew over Beveren. One of their targets was the church, so that in the event of a potential advance by the Allies, it could not serve as a watchtower. The British dropped five bombs on the village. Three of them crashed onto the church, which was heavily damaged.
