The strategic location of Enghien has played a role throughout the centuries: it lay on the old Roman road between Bavay and Asse. In the Middle Ages, it alternately formed part of the Brabant shire, the Duchy of Brabant and the County of Hainaut. The town changed hands several times between various noble houses. Enghien lies in the linguistic border region: alongside a little Dutch, French and Picard are still spoken here. The language border in this region was unclear and complex for a long time, with a mixture of languages and dialects. Enghien’s unique geographical position, at the intersection of languages, cultures and transport routes, has shaped the town into a place with a rich and complex history and identity.
