Millingen aan de Rijn is a municipality and a town in the western Netherlands, in the province of Gelderland. It has a population of 5,922 (1 April 2011) and covers an area of 10.35 km². There are no other centres within the municipal boundaries. The municipality of Millingen aan de Rijn is part of the City Region Arnhem-Nijmegen.De addition "on the Rhine" has not always existed. In fact, it is incorrect. The body of water on which Millingen is located is called the Bijlandsch Kanaal. From the German border to the branch in the Waal and the Pannerdensch Kanaal, it has the name of Count Bijland (pronounced Bieland), who once ordered the canal to be dug (the course of the river Rhine was different at the time). The municipality also includes the hamlet of Zeeland between Millingen and Leuth. The municipality has a friendship with the Hungarian town of Fertőd.
