Emden es una ciudad en el estado alemán de Baja Sajonia, situada a orillas del Ems. Es la ciudad más grande de la región de Frisia Oriental y tiene el puerto marítimo más occidental de Alemania. Como ciudad libre de distrito, Emden no pertenece a un Kreis. La ciudad ha desempeñado un papel importante en la historia de los Países Bajos como lugar de refugio para protestantes perseguidos a principios de la Guerra de los Ochenta Años. Emden se fundó alrededor del año 800 como un asentamiento comercial (Amuthon) en un montículo junto al Ems y se convirtió en el siglo XII en la capital del condado oriental de Emsgo.
A finales del siglo XVI, Emden conoció un período de gran prosperidad. Debido al bloqueo español de los puertos holandeses al inicio de la rebelión holandesa, Emden se convirtió en el puerto de transbordo más importante en el Mar del Norte.
