Situada a medio camino entre Bourges y Châteauroux, la ciudad gala de Uxeldunum, destruida cuando llegó Julio César y reconstruida por éste.Fue siempre una plaza fuerte que se disputaron Ricardo Corazón de León y Felipe Augusto que tuvo que resistir a los hugonotes a los ligueurs, al gran Condé... La ciudad perdió todo su interés histórico después de la Revolución y se eligió Châteauroux como prefectura del nuevo departamento del Indre, cosa que perjudicó enormemente a Issoudun. Desde finales del siglo XIX, Issoudun es un importante centro de devoción Mariana y de peregrinación.
