Willem Janszoon Blaeu, el famoso cartógrafo, nació en 1571 cerca de Alkmaar. Era el hijo de un acomodado vendedor de arenques. Su futuro también estaría en el comercio de arenques. Se trasladó a Ámsterdam para establecer un negocio de arenques allí. Pero eso resultó ser una decepción. Se fue a Dinamarca, donde se convirtió en asistente del gran astrónomo Tycho Brahe.
