El castillo data de origen del siglo XIII. El primer castillo fue destruido en el siglo XVI y reconstruido en 1594. En 1634, la casa deshabitada fue presa de una banda de aventureros liderada por Theodoor Cauwenberg, que hizo la región insegura. Luego, las tropas de Lieja y Aquisgrán sitiaron el castillo y lo desmantelaron. En 1833, los restos fueron nivelados a una meseta, sobre la cual se construyó el castillo actual. En 1880, el castillo fue ampliado.
