El Dakota fue el hogar del ex Beatle John Lennon desde 1973 y fue el lugar del asesinato de Lennon a manos de Mark David Chapman el 8 de diciembre de 1980. A partir de 2010, la esposa y viuda de Lennon, Yoko Ono, aún tiene varios apartamentos en el edificio. El memorial de Strawberry Fields fue diseñado en memoria de Lennon en Central Park, justo enfrente de Central Park West.
