Le parc naturel de la zone volcanique de Garrotxa englobe la région volcanique d'Olot et compte une quarantaine de volcans éteints. Bien que les volcans soient éteints, la région est encore très active du point de vue sismologique. En 1428, un grand tremblement de terre a causé une vingtaine de morts à Barcelone, qui se trouve ici à près de 100 km.
