Dalla Uniebrug puoi oggi contemplare l'intero fronte dell'IJzer, fino alla Torre dell'IJzer a Diksmuide. L'Uniebrug è, insieme al ponte Schoorbakkebrug e al ponte Tervate (Stuivekenskerke), di vitale importanza. Chi possiede i ponti, domina l'IJzer.
Quando la situazione diventa insostenibile, i belgi fanno saltare il ponte. Tuttavia, i tedeschi riescono a oltrepassare l'IJzer e prendono Sint-Joris. Fortunatamente, le inondazioni arrivano all'ultimo momento a portare soccorso.
Sint-Joris rimane per quattro anni una postazione tedesca, vicino alle chiuse di Nieuwpoort, da dove i belgi mantengono l'inondazione.
