Il Salm nasce a Commanster sull'ex confine prusso-belga, che qui seguiva lo spartiacque, e sfocia nell'Amel presso il municipio di Trois-Ponts. La zona di nascita è a più di 500 metri, la foce a 260 metri sul livello del mare.
