Smalcalda è una città di 19 505 abitanti della Turingia, in Germania.Appartiene al circondario di Smalcalda-Meiningen .
Il nome della città è documentato ufficialmente per la prima volta nell'874 d.C. con il nome di Smalacalda .
Venne elevata al rango di città nel 1227 e vent'anni più tardi divenne feudo degli Heneberg ai quali rimase fino al 1583 quando entrò a far parte dei domini dell'Assia, i cui signori vantavano già dei diritti su di essa dal 1360.
