Löbau è stata la sede del potente unione delle sei città dell'Alta Lusazia, fondata nel 1346, che comprendeva anche Kamenz, Bautzen, Görlitz, Zittau e Lauban (polacco Luban). Il simbolo della città è la Torre in ghisa unica in Europa, la Torre Friedrich-August, situata sul Monte Löbauer (450m).
Al margine nord della città vale la pena visitare la "Casa Schminke", progettata da Hans Scharoun per la famiglia del produttore di pasta Fritz Schminke. La casa, affettuosamente chiamata dai Löbauern "Nudeldampfer", è considerata uno dei più importanti edifici della moderna architettura classica. È anche possibile pernottare in loco. Molto degni di nota sono anche la bella piazza del mercato con il robusto municipio e la vicina Chiesa di Nikolai del XIII secolo.
