L'imperatore Carlo si dimise dal suo trono all'età di 56 anni. Tre giorni dopo aver abdicato nel 1556, lasciò le Fiandre in direzione di Yuste, nell'estramadura spagnola. Lì fece costruire un piccolo palazzo accanto al Monasterio de San Jeronimo per trascorrere il resto dei suoi giorni. Per questo ultimo viaggio, imbarcò a Vlissingen. Dopo tredici giorni raggiunse la costa asturiana.
