Il nome Bronkhorst è stato menzionato per la prima volta intorno all'anno 1000, quando un discendente di Bruncharus, il primo conte di Hameland, avrebbe fondato un insediamento con questo nome. Dal 1482 Bronkhorst possiede diritti di città.
Il paese è stato progettato sistematicamente ai piedi del castello dei signori di Bronckhorst. Tra i principali reperti storici conservati vi sono la cappella e alcune case con facciate a gradoni, nonché alcune abitazioni con legno nelle mura esterne. Il castello, le mura della città e i canali della città sono scomparsi.
