Il quadruplicarsi della popolazione nel XVII secolo fu accompagnato da una mancanza di servizi igienici che portarono a molte malattie come il colera, la peste e la tubercolosi. Così, 3 dei 4 bambini di Rembrandt morirono dopo pochi mesi. Le loro bare si trovano nella piazza dietro la Zuiderkerk. Anche sua moglie Saskia morì in giovane età (29 anni). La sua tomba si trova nella Oude Kerk, alla prima nicchia a sinistra dell'organo. Anche la sua compagna di vita successiva Hendrickje, suo figlio Titus e sua nuora Magdalena morirono prematuramente. Sono sepolti insieme a Rembrandt stesso nella Westerkerk.
