Weiteveen è iniziato negli anni 1850 grazie a coloni hannoveriani che si stabilirono nell'Amsterdamscheveld. Hanno costruito case di sod, iniziato a scavare torba e piantato grano saraceno nei campi bruciati. Nel 1919, fu costruita nella villaggio la Chiesa di Maria Regina della Pace. Nel 1924, apparve un insediamento protestante. Fino al 1954, l'area era conosciuta come Nieuw-Schoonebekerveld. Nel 1954, il confine tra Emmen e Schoonebeek è stato ridefinito e i due insediamenti si sono fusi come Weiteveen. Il nome è una combinazione di grano saraceno e torba.
