Il Hortus Botanicus è uno dei giardini botanici più antichi del mondo (1682), originariamente concepito come giardino di erbe medicinali.
Nel laboratorio di Hugo de Vries (1912) dell'architetto Joan van der Meij sono già riconoscibili alcuni elementi dello stile della Scuola di Amsterdam nel decorativo mosaico di mattoni.
In Plantage Parklaan abitava al numero 9 il genetista Hugo de Vries. Ricevette il suo cancello d'accesso proprio di fronte alla sua casa. Attraverso quel cancello d'accesso hai una vista diretta sulla Gunnera (una pianta con foglie simili a quelle di un mammut con un diametro di ben 2,50 metri).
Un po' più in là si trova il meraviglioso Palmenkas, che è stato costruito appositamente per onorare Hugo de Vries.
