Nel tredicesimo secolo, Marken fu separata dalla terraferma durante le tempeste. Seguì un periodo di secoli di isolamento per gli abitanti, che vivevano di pesca. Solo nel 1957 Marken fu collegata alla terraferma da una diga e da allora è diventata un'isola.
Per proteggersi dalle inondazioni, gli abitanti costruirono fino al diciassettesimo secolo le loro caratteristiche case in legno (verdi) su tumuli, che chiamavano loro stessi ‘werven’. In seguito, le case furono costruite su pali.
Dopo la costruzione della Afsluitdijk (1932), l'isola non ha più dovuto affrontare inondazioni, ma le tipiche case sono rimaste.
