Rumbeke produceerde één van de toppers in de muziekwereld. Rond 1490 werd Adriaen Willaert hier geboren. Enige decennia later zou hij vijfendertig jaar lang kapelmeester van de San Marcobasiliek worden. Een kapelmeester is iemand die de leiding heeft bij het uitvoeren van muziek. Vlaanderen stond toen aan de top als het op produceren van muziek aankwam. Adriaen Willaert geldt als de centrale figuur van de Venetiaans school en pionier van het Italiaanse madrigaal. Een madrigaal is een seculiere overwegend vocale muziekvorm, in de 14e eeuw ontstaan in Noord-Italië.
