Na de afbraak van de stadsversterkingen werd een deel van de vrijgekomen gronden (Eindries) verkocht aan de vooraanstaande familie Liedts. Charles Liedts, een belangrijke Belgische jurist en staatsman, liet er rond 1860 een buitenverblijf bouwen. Na succesvolle diplomatieke onderhandelingen met Frankrijk werd hij baron en koos hij als devies "All for Duty". Deze familieleuze prijkt nog altijd op de cartouches van het huidige kasteel. Charles' zoon, Amedée Liedts, verbouwde het oorspronkelijke pand en liet zijn initialen in de vensterramen aanbrengen. De kinderloze Amedée schonk het "Kasteel Liedts" met de bibliotheek, de kunstverzamelingen en de tuin in 1907 aan de stad op voorwaarde dat de begrenzing van het "Park Liedts" nooit zou wijzigen en dat ook de volkstuintjes bleven bestaan. De geschonken kunstwerken vormen een belangrijk deel van de Stedelijke Collectie van het stadhuis.
