Het Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos (Vlaamse overheid) beheert zo'n 400 hectare van het bos, andere delen zijn nog in privébeheer. Een groot gedeelte, het Maldegemveld, is in beheer bij Natuurpunt.Het Drongengoedbos is bekend voor zijn grote verscheidenheid aan paddenstoelen en nachtvlinders. Maar ook de variatie aan loof- en naaldbos afgewisseld met natte graslanden en heide weet heel wat plant- en diersoorten te bekoren. De vele dreven en bomenrijen zijn belangrijke 'ecologische snelwegen' waarlangs planten en dieren vlot kunnen migreren. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat het Drongengoed-Maldegemveld, inclusief het vliegveld, Europees beschermd is.
