Description

Huidige vrije gemengde basisschool Sint-Franciscus, teruggaand op de in 1880 gebouwde katholieke lagere meisjesschool van de wijk Sombeke. Voordien werd er al onderwijs verleend door de religieuzen van de Heilige Jozef van Elversele, overgenomen door de zusters Maricolen van Waasmunster (sinds 1968 Mariazusters van Franciscus). Links aanpalend op Sombekedries bouwden de zusters in 1890 naast de lagere meisjesschool een klooster met tehuis voor verlaten kinderen, wezen, bejaarden en kostkopers, in de periode 1914-1918 omgevormd tot het Sint-Jozef pensionaat met middelbaar onderwijs. Dit beeldbepalende neogotische complex van de hand van bouwmeester Modest De Noyette is echter intussen gesloopt.
