Barceloneta is bekend vanwege zijn zandstrand (dit strand wordt ook genoemd in boek 2 van Don Quichot) en de vele restaurants en nachtclubs aan de boulevard. De laatste jaren is de kwaliteit van het zand op het strand een bron van voortdurende controverse. In februari 2008 is de WHO een onderzoek begonnen om er achter te komen of het zand voldoet aan de WHO strandgezondheids- en veiligheidsstandaarden.
