Op 15 augustus 1944 probeerden een Franse B-26 Marauder bommenwerper en een Amerikaanse B-17 om de spoorbrug en de verkeersbrug die de Durance in Sisteron overspannen te vernietigen. Het weer was ongunstig en men miste de bruggen. Eén van de bommenwerper liet per ongeluk meerdere bommen op de stad vallen. Deze vielen onder andere op een volle kerk met 100 doden als gevolg. ook de citadel werd ernsitg beschadigd. 2 dagen later probeerde men opnieuw de bruggen te vernietigen. En deze keer met succes.
