De bovenste kaart van Methoni dateert van de tweede helft 17de eeuw. Je ziet reeds wat bewoning buiten de muren van de omwalde stad, maar de heuvelrug waar het grootste deel van Methoni nu gebouwd is was nog zo goed als leeg. De inname van dat gebied kwam pas net na de Griekse revolutie in de eerste helft van de 19de eeuw. Toen tekende enkele Franse ingenieurs het eerste urbane plan voor een stad in de nieuwe Griekse staat uit: het moderne Methoni. Dat plan dateert van 1829.I Het plan kreeg ter goedkeuring ook de handtekening van Kapodistrias, de eerste leider van Griekenland.
