Het Eemskanaal verbindt de stad Groningen met Delfzijl . Het kanaal is aangelegd tussen 1866 en 1876 en is in 1953 verbreed.Het kanaal is een belangrijke scheepvaartverbinding en is tegelijk de belangrijkste waterafvoer van het noordoosten van Drenthe en het gebied rond Hoogezand en Sappemeer, waar zich veel scheepsbouw bevindt.
