In 1618 werd met behulp van vijftien watermolens begonnen met het droogmalen van het Purmermeer. In 1622 was het project klaar. Een vruchtbaar gebied van 26,8 km² was ontstaan.
In het midden van de Purmer werd een afwateringskanaal gegraven: de Middentocht. Parallel aan de Middentocht legden de inrichters twee polderwegen aan: de Westerweg en de Oosterweg.
De grond werd verdeeld in smalle, rechthoekige kavels. Omdat de grondwaterstand te hoog bleek voor akkerbouw werd het grootste deel van de polder al snel gebruikt als grasland.
