Dit is een vrij groot plein in het westelijke deel van het historische centrum. Het wordt zo genoemd omdat hier de kerk en het Huis van Barmhartigheid staan; ook het Hof van Beroep is hier gevestigd.
Het is een rechthoekig geplaveid plein met een fontein in het midden (hoewel het plein niet voetgangersgebied is), waartegen een monument voor Afonso Henriques staat. De gebouwen eromheen hebben betegelde gevels en grote galerijen. De achterkant van het plein loopt naar rechts uit en vormt een kleine tuin waar het João Franco Memorial staat, waaraan het plein zijn huidige naam ontleent.
Er is ook een kleine kapel-oratorium met een beeldhouwwerk dat een van de staties van de kruisweg voorstelt.
