Om de handel op de belangrijke rivier de Hudson te controleren bouwde de West Indies Company of WIC hier een nederzetting. . Ze noemden het Niew Amsterdam. Maar de kolonie werd bedreigd door Indianen en werd ook aangevallen door de Britten. De WIC heeft daarom hier een muur gebouwd om zich te verdedigen. Die muur ligt aan de oorspong van de naam van een van de beroemdste straten ter wereld: Wall Street. De muur is gemarkeerd op de kaart van Jacques Cortelyou, toenmalig algemeen gouverneur van Nieuw-Amsterdam.
