La XVI Copa del Món es disputà a França, entre el 10 de juny i el 12 de juliol de 1998. França va ser el tercer país en organitzar la Copa del Món de Futbol per segona vegada , 60 anys després del mundial organitzat en 1938. Per primera vegada en la fase final de la Copa del Món participaren 32 seleccions nacionals dividides, en una primera ronda, en 8 grups classificant-se les dues primeres de cada grup a vuitens de final i a un sistema d'eliminació directa.
